Default electric vs. mechanical fan

one of my next purchases is going to be an aluminum radiator for my 65. the standard radiator seems to be a bit small. has anyone fabbed to make a larger radiator fit. also i obviously want a shroud but it seems they are only used on electric fans. pros cons on electric vs. mechanical?

I have a 66 with a fairly well built 302 it can get over 130f on the streets in summer. It does not over heat, runs just a bit higher than in winter.
I have an eclectic fan and aluminum radiator.

The electric fan has a huge advantage over stock fan, as it uses no HP to run* (see explanation)
I have the black magic by flexa lite it was about 220 bucks i think and has never missed a beat (been on for 5 years)

As far as im concerned there is no disadvantage

*(explanation) IT DOES actually rob some HP VIA the alternator but it DOESNT count because it only comes on when air flow is below 10mph (unless its really hot out) It never comes on when im on the freeway or traffic is moving. What im saying is the fan is off when the car is moving so it doesn’t rob any HP that you are aware of.

One of the best upgrades you can get.

A clutch fan is also a good option if electric is out of your price range or you dont like a few more wires.

I have a direct replacement aluminum radiator and a clutch fan with no shroud. My engine temp never gets above 180

just seems like our stock radiators are not sufficient even if upgrading to aluminum. how bout dual electric vs. single?

anybody ever cut out part of the front of the stang to allow for a bigger radiator? ( i am really contiplating on this one)

Well your stock radiator can best be described as "there was a time" 40 years ago (think its original?) it was sufficient but now is full of deposits and doesn’t flow or transfer heat as well. If you get a good aluminum direct replacement as 19stang66 and myself have you should have NO issues with an overheating problem. If it does overheat there is a more serious issue at hand or your putting out over 400HP. If neither of those are the case then there should be no problems that I can think of, it should work great.

I have a large single fan Im not sure if two smaller ones would be better or worse??

Not true. A stock (drop in) alum rad is way more efficient than brass/copper. Besides you can get big core alum rads.

Here is an article. More trouble than it's worth IMO.

I think you should still be okay. I have the two core northern each core is about twice a wide as a normal core and it is as efficient as a 4 core copper radiator. You will probably want an electric fan that pulls a bit more CFM than the black magic however.

With the right electric fan setup and a high quality aluminum radiator (direct fit) it should work!

Hopefully someone here has a similar setup and can confirm my suggestion.

wow i have my original and i got it rotted and cleaned for $40 by the local rad shop and it cools very good but what i wish that they would come out with is a rad that has copper tubes and aluminum fins now that would cool really well due to the chemical properties of the two metals (aluminum bad heat absorber excellent heat expeller) copper (excellent heat absorbtion poor heat expeller)
