67 coupe engine question
I have a chance to buy a 67 coupe. The owner said it has an originall 351 Cleveland in it. My research says that was not an option that year. My question is how do you tell what engine is in it when the stickers are missing or unreadable?? It could be a 390 but I couldn't tell, it was dark and the flashlight wasn't working too good. Is there an engine code on the engine and where would that be. I have worked on lots of fords but all small blocks and that was many years ago.I have a link on VIN's so I can figure out what should be in it. It dosen't look like an engine swap was done, it has AC and looks original. Thanks
The 390 will have some of the intake manifold under the valve cover. The heads are sort of half of most other engines. The FE motor was available in the 67. A Cleveland will have a pretty big looking cylinder head and you are correct, it wasn't available in a 67 but will fit so it could have one. The 351 Cleveland uses the smaller 14mm spark plugs, has a separate front cover (bolted to the block) housing the timing chain and routing water - so that water does not go through the intake manifold. It also has 8 bolts holding the valve covers on. The 289/302/351W have a freeze plug in the front of the head and thermostat housing bolted to the front of the intake and have 5 bolts holding on the valve covers. Generally there are casting numbers on the intake and heads but they may be hard to read/find.

To add to tarafied's response, the 390 (and 428) will have a "352" cast into the front of the block just under thedriver's side cylinder head as shown in the attatched photo. If it is a FE series motor, it will have the engine compartment pretty full between the shock towers.

If you want to know what was in the Mustang originally look at the VIN number. If the drivers door is original it will be there, or under the hood on the drivers side. There will be a notch in the fender and the VIN will be there. The 5th letter/number will be the engine code. S= 390 A=289 4V C =289 2V T= 6cyl Check out this link http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/students/Blommel/

The 351 Cleveland hadn't even been invented in 1967, however someone could have put a Clevo in it. Most lilkely, if it is a 351, it is a Windsor. Here is a quick check guide without having to take the starter or valve covers off.
351 Windsor
351 Cleveland
5-bolt straight valve covers
8 bolt 2-plane valve covers
radiator hose to the intake manifold
radiator hose does not connect to intake
regular 5/8" spark plugs
small 14mm spark plugs
351 Windsor
351 Cleveland
5-bolt straight valve covers
8 bolt 2-plane valve covers
radiator hose to the intake manifold
radiator hose does not connect to intake
regular 5/8" spark plugs
small 14mm spark plugs
Really easy and quick way to tell if it is an FE or Cleveland or Windsor is the number of valve cover bolts.
FE = 5 bolts
Cleveland = 8 bolts
Windsor = 6 bolts
FE = 5 bolts
Cleveland = 8 bolts
Windsor = 6 bolts
Well just to finish the story, I bought the 67 Coupe. It has had an engine and transmission swap, it has a 351 windsor and a FMX trans in it. Still in good shape and lots of potential for a fun ride. Thanks for all the information. Carl
