Detroit locker- ohh no!!!
so i come home today, and i am informed that my dad bought a nine inch, with 3.90 gears. great. Did you get a trac-loc posi for it. Guess what he tells me. "nope but i got a detroit locker. SH**. i have heard that these are hellish. please i need advice. keep it, or convince him to return it.
Damn right, they are almost indestructable. My 66 Shelby had one, yes it would pop and bang on corners and occasionally during lane changes under acceleration. The trac-loc so called posi is a limited slip, the Detroit Locker is a true locking differential. If you stand on it it will lay two identical stripes. As long as your rear axle is properly aligned in the chassis the car will go straight ahead. Mine would go whichever way the hood was pointed, and you had better be pointed where you wanted to go as it would lift the front enough that steering became an issue.
Careful on a wet road or you will take a wild ride. What are you going to do with the car? Pleasure cruising, some racing, serious racing? Thesewere used alot in racing. A traction loc or posi would be better for everyday driving. The Lockers usually are worth the most money of the three if you decide to trade.
I just really dont think i need the locker. I will drive it frequently, weather permitting. Not much racing, other than the ocassional burn out at a red light.
It is an automatic, dead car could you better explain to me what you mean

you'll be fine, if you have any kind of exhaust on your setup you probably won't even hear it.
you will be able to feel a little roughness through the drivetrain if you have an auto, but the lockers are damn near bullet proof, so I would tell dad thank you and start figuring out when you can install it. imo, its not excessive, even if your stang is just a DD.
