Default U-Joint Problem! Help!!!

Hello all... new to the forum and I'm loving it so far. I've already learned tons. I just picked up a '66 Coupe with 289 2bbl/C4 auto. I went to do the u-joints the other day and for some reason I couldn't get any of the new u-joints to fit the front. I originally picked up a set with outer locking rings for the front and inner locking rings for the rear. The parts shop kept asking if I had inner or outer locking rings. I tried to explain to him that the front u-joint had both inner and outer locking rings (2 of each), but he was having trouble understanding. The rear fit just fine, but of course no luck with the front. To avoid making several trips to the store, I had my wife meet me at the shop after picking up every u-joint they had for my car. I had her pick them up because I was already at the shop with the drive shaft removed. No luck with any of the u-joints she picked up, so I grabbed the front u-joint, left the car at the shop, and drove back to the parts store with my wife to try to find the correct u-joint. I went through every u-joint they had in stock and none of them matched up. I believe the front u-joints I picked up matched the drive shaft, but not the yoke. The holes in the yoke were smaller in diameter than every u-joint I had.

Could the previous owner have swapped out the yoke without changing the driveshaft? I figure he must have done some kind of swapping in the drive train, but without having a correct 289/C4 combo drivetrain to compare my parts to, I'm not sure what parts he may have swapped. Any other ideas of what could be going on here? If it was a swap, any idea from what vehicle? What identifying marks are there on my tranny, rear-end, and drive-shaft to verify they are correct for my car? I'm lost! Thanks in advance for your help.

I attached a small pic... the car really is a beauty!
