Default welder settings

how do yall set up your welders for panel replacement and other welding repairs on old mustangs?

we've got pretty good equipment miller MIG welder and a miller TIG welder, we've tried MIG and TIG and just cant seem to get good results with either. About all we have tried welding is a couple small rust holes, which end up burning through. I imagine this is just because the metal has rusted thin. Anybody have any tips?

what we've started doing is taking small peices of 18 GA sheetmetal behind the hole

we own a sheetmetal shop, so all those scraps are finally coming in handy
