which rear end do i have?
Hello, my names Joe and im new to the site. I just sold my 2003 mach 1 and decided to go old school and i bought a 1966 fastback 2+2, 289, 4 spd. I havent received it yet because it is being shipped from florida.
I have a couple of questions for you guys:
Does the car come equipped with a ford 8 in or 9 in? If it is an 8 in, where can i buy a 9 in made for a 66 mustang so it would be a direct bolt on? Any particular company?
Also, i would like to lower the car some and dont know where to get the parts to do this. Would it be springs up front? What about the rear?
And last, where can i get a newer version of the clutch cable for the stock 4 spd?
Thanks guys for the help in this...i just want to dive right in when i get the car. The car is completely restored and all i need are go fast parts!!

welcome Roo, get some catalogs www.npdlink.com www.texasmustang.com www.mustangsunlimited.com www.cjponyparts.com www.mustangsplus.com www.yearone.com
the rear will be more than likely a 8" unless its a 289"K" code but I believe even some of the K cars got 8" rear www.jegs.com www.summitracing.com for 9"rears complete

Unless it was swapped in, you'll have an 8" rear end. If you want a 9" ready bolt right in with no work, aside from $$$ of course, Currie Enterprises will hook you up. I've gotten three different rearends from them with great results.
To lower the car, look in the mags or Mustang parts catalogs for performance suspensions. I have the full Global West suspension which greatly enhances handling and also lowers it a bit.
For the clutch cable, I went with Mustang Steve's clutch kit. To me, it looked like the best engineered kit and it also uses a standard late model Mustang adjustable cable. It is designed for the 5-speed swap I think, but I thought it could be made to work with the 4-speed. It is easier to do if you use a steel scattershield, but he also describes the fab work necessary to use the stock bellhousing on his website.

thanks guys...i'll be ordering those magazines here shortly.
Can the rear ends from Currie be slightly tubbed? Not much just want maybe about 2 inches on each side so i can put a little wider wheel in back...i'm going for the Year One 66 stang look for the wheels and i know they tubbed the rear a little bit...i wonder if fitment would be a problem?

another EXCELLENT source for parts is eBay. you'd be surprized at how many people dont even think to look there - but theres always something good on there

One more thing to keep in mind. If you upgrade to a 9", you'll need to have your driveshaft shortened. You'll probably need to use a different rear universal also as the yoke on the 9" uses bigger caps.

Does the car come equipped with a ford 8 in or 9 in? If it is an 8 in, where can i buy a 9 in made for a 66 mustang so it would be a direct bolt on? Any particular company? Are you planning on upgrading your horsepower significantly? The 8" is fine up to 300-350 hp, which your stock, or even slightly modified 289 will be in range of.
Also, i would like to lower the car some and dont know where to get the parts to do this. Would it be springs up front? What about the rear? Lowering can be done by changing the rear leaf springs to mid-eye or reverse eye leafs. Fronts are lowered by going to shorter, stiffer (620lb) springs.
And last, where can i get a newer version of the clutch cable for the stock 4 spd? Not sure if anyone's making that as a regular kit. Another option is to improve the zbar linkage like this:
