66 fastback questions...
Hey guys, whats up?
I have a couple of questions that i'm sure you all could answer...
I have a 66 fastback coming in next week and i wanted to know, what is the widest wheel i can put on the back? Is it a 17 x 8? What backspacing would i need? I was thinking of a wheel like the junkyard dog or magneato from Boyd coddington....whats the widest in the front?
What is the weight of a 66 fastback (289)?
Ive also been reading on here all the talk of 289's and 302's not doing much at the track and that people should be lucky to run a 15....well, i'd have to disagree...i owned a completely stock 302 mustang with mufflers, 3.73's, and i ran a 13.7 on street tires...it was a 88 gt.....
i would think that a 289 or 302 with minor mods in an early year mustang should be able to muster up at LEAST a 13 second timeslip...well, i guess driver means alot...
I'm new to the 4 speed thing and was wondering what is the best shifter out there for the 4 spd. I know hurst is good but which one?
I havent posted much cause i'm new to the site....ithink maybe i shouldtell you all a lil something about me...well, first off my names Joe. I'm from south Texas and love racing. Cars is my love and ive had several over the years. I'm 30 yrs old andamabout to get married in May!!! So, i gotta get the parts now!!! lol My last car ive owned is an 03 mach 1. I just sold it last friday because i accomplished my goal that i set. And that was to run an 11 second et with a 100% stock longblock. Well, i did it and it took 2 yrs of trial and error. The car went 11.93 @ 114 mph. So, with that being said, i decided to go old school and buy a car that i will keep. So i bought a 66 fastback, 289, 4 spd. Its totaly stock and i cant wait to get it so i can begin modding it. I want to get it the fastest i can n/a and yet still be able to enjoy the car. I'm looking to get about 350 rwhp....believe it or not that is good enough for a mid 11. When i ran my 11 seond et on the 03 mach 1, i only had 311 rwhp and the car is heavier that the 66. My first mods for the 66 is gonna be some hooker super comp ceramic coated headers, x pipe, and some magnaflows. The 289 has been rebuilt and most probably to stock specs. So, i'll probably get some afr's, a nice lopey streetable cam, intake, and demon carb. I think that should be good for some 300 plus rwhp...if you all have any pointers or opinions on cams...let me know!!! Thanks!!

well joe, it seems you got a solid grip on what you want to do with the car. and those mods should get your up to 300+HP
also the 5.0's in the fox's were alot different then the 302's in the clasic stangs. the engine had better technology, better tranny, better axle
definently not on the same level as a stock 302 from a 68 stang

do a member search for "dodgestang"....he has an awesome pdf chart of wheel and tire fitment for the classic mustangs. It will pretty much answer any possible questions you might have about wheel and tire fitment.
