ANY EXPERTS OUT THERE?
So I just recently purchased my first 1967 Mustang and it is basically in perfect condition. The engine, paint, wheels, interior are all pretty much prystine. Here's the problem: The engine is the original engine with some parts replaced. But...the air filter has caught on fire twice.I ran out of gas once and we put some gasoline inside the intake manifold (it was dry) and I thougt that sparked to catch the filter on fire. Replaced the air filter and it caught flames again today. Anybody have any idea what is going on?
1st congrats on the 67. Second, WTF man. sounds like something is going on with your carb. What kind of filter do you have? So you took off the carb and poured gass down the intake while starting it? How much gas? Can you give a better discription of events?
i took off the air filter. We put a little bit of gasoline down the intake manifold (you know, because the engine was running dry and there's no fuel injection). Turned the car on and put the filter back on. I drove it for about 10 minutes and it was fine. Later drove for a good 15, when back to start it-it wouldn't, lifted the hood and BOOM-flames. Today, just drove it, wouldn't start and noticed smoke. Can you explain the carb idea in a little more detail?
i barely put a little gas in there. Not that much. the filter was a special order and perfect condition. Then replaced it with just a basic filter from the Mustang specialty shop. Any recommendations when I purchase my new one? (After I figure out what else is going on)
how are connections to the carb. Maybe a little spray comming from the lines and spraying everywhere. Your carb may be throwing fuel around and up into the filter and catching there. Not sure if this is exactly safe or if it will work but take off the air cleaner and with the car OFF have someone pump the gas and see if any fuel is shooting out anywheres
well your filter should be fine, you could go K&N if you want, it'll probably breath a little better but that is not the root of your problem. Is it an open/hi-po filter or a closed filter?
BTW, I think that i might have possibly flooded the engine. Everytime I try to start the engine i step on the gas A LOT. Probably shouldn't do that-but could that be the issue in getting gas into the intake manifold?
hi-po looks like this http://www.mustangsplus.com/Merchant...e=air_cleaners

If you flooded the engine (I don't think you did) turn the engine over without hitting the gas. If it doesn't fire up then you after a couple of tries that's not it. If after that you try and start it without hitting the gas it's deffenetly a fuel problem.
