Default Spring question

Okay, I have to buy a "MacPherson" strut spring compressor (set of two)so I can remove the springs to change the struts on my DD. Would I be able to use them on the 66 to compress the coils? It's gonna run me 20-22, shipping included(on eBay) for the compressor tool, but the internal style one is something like 35 with shipping. I really don't wanna have to buy a second compressor tool if I don't have to, but considering the force I've seen these things put out (watched a 400+/- pound guy get launched across 3 bays, break 2 ribs and dislocate his shoulder on another lift, changing aspring) I'd rather be safe than sorry!!!!!

You'll need the internal on the classics. The factory spring compressor bolted onto the bottom screen perch and used the top of the shock tower as a perch. Works really well, and it would be easy enough to build with some good steel. After the spring is compressed, just unbolt the perch and remove the a-arm, then let the spring go. Just make sure the threaded rod is long enough to hold an extended spring.

I used two external spring compressors on my 66 with abosolutly no problems. A lil tip: use an impact wrench or air ratch to tighten the bolts when you are putting the new springs in. Just be very careful as to using an air tool in this situation. I used one and I was very careful about using it and it made this project go by much faster.

Good to hear Lance. Only prob, I don't have a good enough compressor so unless I spend 300-400 for the cordless impact gun at Sears I have been eyeing for 3 years (LOL!!), I'm roughing it! I'll use my left arm to counter the growth from all those years of bowling. I almost look like the weird guy from The Lady in the Water. [:'(]

Mike, how longwouldit have to beto cover the spring on the 66?

anytime your are changing springs loop a chain through the spring and anchor it to the body of your car. just for safety

The will work fine. I used them on my 67. However, I did have to stagger them to get the springs compresed enough. Also, I left my shoks in place(unbolted though) so as to stave off any flying springs and removed them after the spring was ready to come off, kept my face and extremeties as far away as possibel, and was carefull to compress both sides a little at a time. The internal compressor is better, but go with what you got.

Can't you borrow those from Autozone or one of the general auto supply parts places?
