Since you're in the market for a new carb, you may as well spend $15 on a rebuild kit from Autozone and attempt to rebuild it yourself. I recently rebuilt mine for the first time and learned more than I could ever read about by actually seeing how everything worked. Then you'll figure out if you need to adjust your idle set screw, idle mixture screws, choke, fast idle cam, etc! Everyone here will get you through (I know they did for me).

And if you rebuild it and screw something up...well, just think of the $15 as a (cheap) carbeducation expense. Nobody was more surprised than I was when my mustang started on the third crank after the rebuild...

You need to set the choke. By that I mean press the pedal to the floor once, that sets the choke, now you can start the car the normal way. Also since you only want the car to idle faster when its cold, there is an adjustment screw on the other side by the big round choke housing. If I can get moving outside I will look at the truck and post back which one and what way to turn it.

And yes cars with carbs need some warm up time where as modern EFI doesnt. So its one of those things you gotta deal with.

Your friend never adjusted the Choke, There dust on the Black cap that wouldn't be there if he had turned it.
Look at the picture and losen the three screws turn the black cap in the direction of Rich .
I think if its a hard thing for you to adjust idel, then telling you how is probably dangerous for you.

There is also a fast idle set screw which controls how fast the engine revs when cold and the choke is on. That is the idle you want to increase. adjusting the main idle screw will not help when the car is cold. You need to adjustthe set screw on the choke side. However, judging by the condition of your carb, your problem may be related to other issues. I would not be driving the car with the gas leakingout of the accelerator pump like that.

Turn that screw that is circled clockwise (righty tighty) and the
RPM's will pick up on the engine. You want it at about 800 RPM, Then screw your two idle adjustment (fuel/air misture screws) that are located at the bottom of the front of the carb all the way in, then back them out about 2 turns. Keep coming out with them until the engine runs smoothly.

just making sure, didn't see anyone mention that yet, and the poster mentioned that he lacks experience thought that may be a good bit to add
