describe the noise?

Does the motor acutally start and run? Do you hear the noise as the starter engages or as the motor turns over?

Lots of questions.

What book? At the rear of the motor, I'd suspect either a starter that is not disengaging properly or having proper clearance or an inspection plate or block plate rubbing up against the flywheel or flexplate. Does the sound come from inside the block or outside?

Let's wait until he gets back from the shop. I suspect the flywheel wasn't installed correctly.

Drain plug hole? You mean the torque converter drain in the flexplate?
