Exhaust upgrade....
Hello alll.
I'm playing around with upgrading my exhaust to shorty headers and would like to know if H or X pipe's are benificial to the system? Are they worth the extra $$$$ and if so, is one better than the other? Thanks... Brad

Both the H and the X pipes are better than none. The problem with our engines is that two cylinders on the same side fire almost simultaneously, so you have exhaust gas going through one side of the exhaust system, and none through the other side. What the crossover pipes do is to distribute the exhaust gas to both pipes/mufflers so that the engine breathes better. The X pipe works a litle better because the exhaust gas doesn't have to take a 90 degree turn as it does with the H pipe. Yes, they are worth the extra cost.
hey thumpin how bout like this? thing that sucks is when i put the new tranny is too wide so i have to have these tweaked

Tone differences are something to think about too. An X-pipe will muffle some of the deepness of your exhaust tone, but because it equalizes better than an H, you will end up with a more tuned sound. I have heard they can accentuate the tinniness of hedder noise at WOT as well.
My current exhaust is practically brand new so I really have no need (or money) to replace the mufflers and whatever else I can salvage.Unfortunitly when the PO had the new exhaust system put on he stuck with thefactory 2"system. I'd like shorty headers but all the X or H pipes I see seam to be for LT's or Tri Y's. I might have to go with Tri Y's.
You could still get an x-pipe to work with shorties, youll just need to have an exhaust shop make a section of exhaust pipe that comes down from behind the block and meets up with the x (where LT's would). It might look a little half-assed, but you could definitely use an X or H still
I will say though, with stock 2", you're probably wasting your time with adding an X. 2" just wont breathe right to make noticable gains.

Both can equalize the exhaust flow by allowing different types of criss crossing (hence the H and X names) between the left and right banks. Neither are really worth a ton of HP gains by themselves, but paired with an entire strong system, they do provide some benefits. I am running a Dr. Gas X-pipe, and while most will say that the X-pipe sacrifices a little bottom end power, it makes up for itself in top end. I definitely feel like there is a stronger pull in higher RPM's with the X than when I was running and H.
