Default ENGINE QUESTION

hey guys and gals. i have a 67 coupe and im looking for an engine to throw in there. i found a 5.0 engine on craigslist for 3000 and its a roller block that has just been rebuilt with roller cams and roller heads and the whole roller set up hahaha....very nice looking but the thing is it came out of a 1992 truck and not a 5.0 mustang. so im wondering if this will work out? will it devalue the mustang because of a non mustang engine? if it does work out imma go carb with this engine due to my lack of expierence for EFI. THANKS

damn it all i hate when u write a respose and u screw up and the net goes away or closes for some reasone. just now.....damn. ill sortin my response best i can.

1st q: 5.0 is a 5.0. your fine. 5.0 is a 302......302 is a 5.0 it is all the same except efi or carbs

2nd: Guessing your highjacking but....

if u have a 87 coupe.... it is a 5.0. if it is a 302 it is a 86.....make sure. im assuming u have a 5.0 but your in the classics forums and soaring will move this no doubt but ill throw my 2 cents in... if u have a 67: in a 67....get a big block...u have the extra room. with a 289......your in my group. heads...headers....new intake and carb...you will be right there

for just a little more you can get a 347 crate motor with 400+ hp and it will be the correct 28oz balance so no problems with harmontic balancer and flywheels.

Take a look at my site below. Should answer most of your concerns about going EFI or not.

Okay. Assuming the second post was a typo about 87s, and you have a 67.. The guys are right about the 5.0 being a 302, and it doesnt matter if its from a truck, stang, tbird, or what. it is the same engine.

The parts that are different are the oil pan and pickup, because the late engines had rear sump or double sump pans and the early cars had front sump pans. The balancer and flywheel/flexplate because the early engines have less balance weight than the later ones do. So if you have a clutch, you will need the late flywheel to put it in your car.Same with the flexplate for an auto, you need the new style for a 5.0L roller engine. btw the stock heads arent that great on those, even the trucks.

$3k is alot of money for a stock rebuild. You can get a crate engine that makes the 300hp-350hp you want for that or a little more. If you just want a driver, then the stock rebuild should work for a long time.

As for the 390 swap, well the parts to put a 390 in a 67-70 are getting very expensive. FE parts in general are getting more expensive due to the people who have the replica Shelby Cobras and they want the 427 look, so they need FEs. Anymore getting a 427 or 428 block is going to cost you, even the 390s are going up fast for a rebuildable core. IF you can find one, then you still need the FE style trans, and only a C6 is gonna work for automatics, headers area available, but things like power steering, and mustang spec accessory drives that have the stuff low enough but not hitting the frame rails, and not to mention all of the engine mounts needed, are getting very hard to come by. So sure, swap in a 390, if you have the 390 parts layin around.

More cubes come easier by the way of Clevelands and 351 Windsors, both can be stroked, and both can make ludicrous power. The Cleveland is getting harder to find, and the Windsor has cheap aftermarket heads that flow well. You can get a crate windsor as well. 4V Cleveland heads will give you a headache with headers in a 67, they fit, but its tight. You dont want a 351M, they look like Cleveland, but the aftermarket doesnt have much for them and they are a tall deck design that requires a 429/460 type bellhousing. A Cleveland and Windsor use the same pattern bellhousing as a 302, although some 302 bellhousings wont fit the 351 flexplates.

If anyone tells you to drop a 4.6L in it, look at them like they have a 3rd eye and ask if they will fund the endeavor, because you need to rework the entire front suspension, cut out the shock towers, and get the EFI transplanted into your car. Add in the cost of the engine, trans and other related hardware that nothing will interchange easily with your old car, and things get pricey real quick. So unless you have deep pockets, and just want something to make people go Oh wow you have a modular motor in there, dont even consider it. Its alot of work and effort for less than you could get from a nice 351W transplant.
