My father just picked up a very nice green '66 mustang 289. How do I know if it's the model with 215 HP or 271?

 

does it say high performance on the air filter??? there is other ways ubt i dont remember.....

The 271hp is the hipo engine. Odds are its not a hipo, pics would help. Also a VIN would tell whether is was originally equiped with a hipo engine.

 

There are a lot of ways to tell but I don't know most of them.Do you see a "K" in the VIN? A few unreliable but quick ways to take a guess are checking to see if it's a 4bbl, the air cleaner sticker, and I think the color of the valve covers.

 

Does it go clickity-click when idling? The 271hp engine has solid lifters and will have valve chatter.

 

C code was 200 HP
A code was 215 HP
K code was 271 HP

 

Look at the bill of sale. If he paid a fair price for a nice early Mustang then it is not the Hi-Po. If he paid an arm and a leg for a nice early Mustang or even a crappy early Mustang then he may indeed have a Hi-Po. If it were a Hi-Po you would likely already know it.

 

A code = 225 HP

[edit] pretty sure the C code was 210 HP.
