I was looking at my shop manual today and came to a page which gave a diagram of the "thermactor exhaust emission system". I'm probably asking another huge newb question here but is that another name for the California emissions?

i dont know, but i can tell you that if you have a classic mustang, you need not worry about any emission tests or anything.

It's a system first introduced in California. Basically an air pump that puts fresh air into the exhaust ports, allowing unburned hydrocarbons (the exhaust gas that burns your eyes) to mix with the oxygen in the air, and then burn at a lower temp on its way out the exhaust port.It also dilutes exhaust gases coming out the tail pipe, giving a somewhat falsifiedlowering of the amount of polution the engine produces.
Like everything to do with environmental concerns, it soon worked it's way across the country. Yesit works, yes it'sbetter than nothingfor the environment, but frankly(IMO) it was a"pacificationmeasure".
Try a google or Wiki search.
That helps a LOT - thanks. So basically if I wanted to clean up the engine compartment and do away with a few extra hoses I could remove it? Let me make sure I understand what I can take off:
a)Air pump
b)Check valves
c)All the air hoses that connect to things like the manifold and backfire supressor valve from the air pump.

Thanks. From a lot of the people I've talked to it didn't make any noticeable difference when they removed theirs. I'm not trying to be inconsiderate or anything but I don't even have all the necessary parts for it because the PO disconnected and lost some parts.

I highly recommend contacting BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) for vehicle smogquestions. CA smog laws are very confusing to say the least. Per the BAR webpage, vehicles 1976 and newer require biannual smog checks, which means you should be able to remove your smog pump and hoses, plug the air jackets, and be fine. I would recommend retaining those smog parts because you never know what the supply will be down the road. Again, BAR can answer your questions, they are the governing body for CA smog.My experience with BAR was verypositive. They wereincredibly cooperative and supportive.BTW, the webpage is http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/StdPage....ck/doineed.htm

I actually live in OH but thanks for the link. I'm hoping to move to CA within the next couple of years so I'll hold on to the equipment
