Default Cams

My lifters are bad on my 302 so I decided to get a new cam while I'm at it to save me time later. My question is what kind of cam should I get (duration, lift, brand)? I want to get a good increase in horsepower, but not enough to **** off my parents (I could careless if I **** off the cops). So what should I do?

What kind of heads do you have? Intake? Exhaust?

For a stock engine, this kit from Summit would be what you'd want. If you aren't stock, let us know what you have.

80 bucks and even though the power range says 2000-4500 thats wrong cause with a factory ford dual plane intake (aluminum from a 83 GT), a holley 4160 600, and exhaust manifolds and single exhaust the car idled great and had crazy power off the line. and it pulled strong up to 5000-5500

That kit includes the timing set, lifters, springs, locks, retainers, and the cam. Anytime you change a cam in an engine with some age, you'll want to replace the timing set. Springs are in the same boat. While you can run a performance (even mild) on stock springs, they will wear out quicker and you will lose you top end quickly due to valve float. It's a little more work, but you will definitely have the best quality with that kind of kit.

Have run both Comp and Crane. Both make quality products. The cam kit that Colorado posted would be perfect for a stock 289/302 with stock manifolds. Replacing the springs, locks, retainers, timing chain, along with the cam and lifters is good advice. You are in there, why not do it?

Even my daily drivers get new springs, control of the valve is more important than most people realize.

If you are on a budget, then at least do the timing chain with the cam and lifters.
