1966 Starting problem
I own a 1966 2+2 with a 289. I've done a lot of restoration to include rebuilding the trans. rewiring the electrical, replacing the fuel tank, rebuilding the carb, replacing the oil filter. I went to go start my pony this evening and she turned over twice then stopped. I went to do it again and it turned over once, then stopped. 3 more attempts and no turn overs. Additionally, i heard a clicking, what sounded like the spark plugs firing. It seems like the battery is dead and can't turn the motor over, but how is it that the spark plugs are still firing???
Thanks,
Mark

RE: 1966 Starting problem
Battery problem is my bet. The clicking is actually the solinoid...it is not getting enough juice so it just clicks. Check the battery with a volt meter. If it is 12, then check the ground cable at both the battery and the block.

You may or may not have separate issues.
First, turning the key to "start" and getting a grinding noise or clicking, can be a sign the battery, starter, perhaps the solenoid are suspect. So, the easiest, pull the battery and have it load tested. Most all of the auto-parts chains can do this for free. If fine, check the ground connections, solenoid connections are clean and in good condition. Check the connection on the starter, as well. There are tests for the solenoid too. The backfire, if there has been no recent work on the timing/ignition, then, it could be a simple matter of the cylinders loading up from your trying to start and getting not fire.
So, get the cranking system in goo working order, then trouble shoot the firing system next. Good Luck!
