Fuel Sending Unit Replacement

Fuel Sending Unit Replacement
I will be replacing my gas tank soon and I was wondering, would it be a good idea to replace fuel sending unit rather than transfer the old one from the old tank? The old one was working when i drained and removed the gas tank. I have a feeling that it is something that does go bad and should be replaced now so that I don't have to drain the new tank in the future. What do you guys think?

YES! Replace the sending unit. They are cheap anyways so you might aswell repalce it now. Wait till you pull it out, it will probably be so nasty you wont think twice of putting it in the new tank.
Just make sure you get a new gasket ring for it and a lock ring. You can use your old lock ring too...

I'll have to vote on replacing it while you have the new tank. If it's the original sending unit, chances are 40 years+ may be wearing the little filter sock on the end of the unit and eventually get pin holes in the float. I know mine was that way and I have replaced the tank and sending unit. Tip: use a hard wood block to tap/loosen the metal retainer off of the unit. Metal to metal = sparks = fire = boom, boom. No one likes boom-boom being that close to the source..

Something that works better than a block of wood or screwdriver, and something every mechanic should have in his tool box.....a brass drift. It's metal and wont chip like wood will, but wont spark like a steel screwdriver either.

OK...sorry about this before I start....gonna use some big words. Brass is a non-ferrous metal, i.e. it doesnt contain any iron. Iron is what causes sparks. And you can go down to Lowes or Home Depot and pick up a piece of brass round stock, 6-8 inches long for a bout 2 bucks.
