Default Heaters

This is probably a stupid thing to ask about considing the heater is 40 years old. but is there anyway that a guy could improve the heating capablities on a 68 Coupe. Because to be quite frank my heater is worthless. it barely produces enough heat to defrost the windows. my car is equipt with A/C but clearly it is to advanced for me to operate properly. any ideas?

Replace your heater hoses and heater core. It's probably full of rust and junk. Check the elbow joint that screws into the intake that feeds the heater hose. It may be corroded also. While you have the heater core out, get a rebuild kit and rebuild the heater box. The new seals will help direct the hot air to the vents.

Properly operating, it should run you out the car on the coldest of days.

Besides the heater box and core that James mentioned, make sure you have a correct, working thermostat. If it is stuck open or too low, the coolant won't get hot enough. BTDT with my Jeep.

Also if it's factory air, make sure all vacuum lines are in good shape and the diaphragms are working properly.

Im having the same problem right now. I suspect the thermostat is stuck open or something. However in the summer the car almost overheats, and the winter it doesn't get hot enough at all. I stuck a piece of cardboard in the front of the radiator for a temperory heat solution.

What are the steps of removing and reinstalling a heater core on a 69? My heater core is on the way.

I just replaced the heater hoses and heater core on my 68 coupe. Here are a couple things I found wrong while doing it. The heater/defroster plenum wasn't securly connected to the heater box so air wasn't being directed properly. The heater hose elbow on the manifold was so old and rusted that when I pulled the hose off of it it was crushed inside from over tightning the clamp so it could barely pass water through. The seal's were mostly all gone. Mustangs Unlimited sells a whole rebuild kit (minus the Heater box assembly and fan) for $65.00. Part # 18502KIT

I was about to say when my heater gets going, it's great. hell you could put a cup of water on the dash and instant sauna! Now the A/C, lots of problems could have happened. Didn't even notice my condesor was brocken until I tried to work a horn issue. The connector snapped off at the condensor. ehh, but I'm switching to 134 anyway so all new stuff for a/c.
