Default please help with no start

have tried everything to get this thing started. ill start from the top ( which is usaly the best place so i heard)

changed motor from 302 to 351 worked it out some and got it running. then i changed out the the intake and carb to a four barrel edlebrock. followed directions got it all back together. went to start it up and all i got was the turning over but no light off or start. checked for fuel and has fuel checked for spark it was weak tested the bat it was dead so i replaced.

tryied to start agian and no start still. checked fuel agian and still good checked for spark agian this time i had a nice blue spark. checked timing tab and the notch is right on the tc mark.

am i missing any thing is there any thing else i can do besides take it to a shop and have them look at it?

that one with plugs in cylinders confused is a cracker ... ;-)

back to your problem:
what rmodel65 is saying is more like that.
It's a 4 stroke engine. So basically in one working cycle the piston goes up twice.

inlet stroke: piston goes from TDC down to pull air-gas mix (inlet valve open, exhaust valve closed)
compression stroke: piston goes up to TDC again both valves closed to compress it. near top you then need the spark (both valves closed!)
work stroke: the explosion will push the piston down again (both valves closed!)
exhaust stroke: piston going up it will push out all burned gasses. (inlet closed, outle open).

that's the general idea.

So in one work cycle you have the piston on TDC twice.
a) when you need the spark
b) when all gasses are pushed out and its starting to pull air again (both kinda open)

so if you have set your distributor to ignite when it's in position a) it's good.
If it sparks in position b) it's useless (no start).

This means for every turn the camshaft does the crankshaft has to do 2 turns.
So if you have your engine set to TDC and it fires there you cannot tell if you'll fire into compressed gas (what you should do) or if you fire into empty cylinder (which is useless).

The only reliable check I know works with every car is to get rid of the valve cover. Make sure that when the engine is turned to TDC both valves on cylinder 1 are closed. If they are not. Turn your engine another 360 degrees. Then the engine should be on TDC and both valves closed. Put the valve cover back on.
Then install your distributor to correct position.

That's what he is saying with the 180 degrees.

For you to check most easily is to
a) either turn the distributor by 180 degrees and check if that works for you. if yes. that's your problem.
b) turn the engine until the rotor points to cylinder one and check if both valvles are closed)
btw: to check if a valve is open or closed: when the camshaft humps are not putting pressure at the valve spring it's open ...
c) I'm convince there is a better, mustang specific way of checking. there must be a marker on the camshaft telling you in what position it is. Someone else has to tell you though. I never replaced a timing chain or checked for that marker for other reasons. So I don't know hwere it is.

sorry for the long read..... I was bored ....

or you can take #1 plug out ..stick a small screwdriver in the hole and see if the piston is up or down.if its down you are 180 off if its up do as jcodekid was saying ...get someone to turn it over while you move the dist. slowly right and or left until it cranks.Be sure not to let go of the dist.while car is running or while you are cranking.
