i just thought it was weird that when i called the eninge shops it was the same story
Either it is a conspiracy or it is true, they won't warranty anything over .030 for some reason.

Yep, and you don't want a 4 thousand dollar engine overhaul that blows up on you without a warranty. Blocks are cheap. It's all the stuff that goes on the block that is expensive, so don't screw around with boring the block passed tolerances as subscribed.

will a 400M bolt right into where a 351C came out of? if so it seems like that would be the way to go.
No it wont. Different bellhousing, taller deck. it has the same trans pattern as the 429/460.

The 4V Cleveland out in the shop is .040 over, I got it that way and when it ran it didnt get hot. it stopped running because the kid I got it from had no clue how to assemble an engine. The rods had mismatched caps even though they were numbered, two pistons where in backwards, and the cam went flat before anything major broke. Either he didnt use any lube on it, or he put used lifters in the wrong bores. the cam had only two lobes that werent flat. I was amazed it ran at all. Even with all of that, it didnt run hot. Since it had fresh machine work I fixed all the screw ups, used new bearings, new cam and lifters. Now its waiting to be dropped into something.

Some blocks are thin and .030 is dicey. Its called core shift, what that means is the casting core moved a bit before or during the iron pour and the cylinders are a bit off from where they should be. it happens in all cast engines, some to a greater degree than others.

they were swapped from side to side. At least the bearings were on right so the crank did not get torn up from no chamfer relief. Same journal had them swapped. I laughed a long time at that one, since the kid said he knew everything there was to know about engines and stuff..

He had it in a 72 Ranchero, his daily driver was a 67 fastback. everything he owned was Ford. he just wasnt a good engine builder, and not even a good assembler..

Yesterday I was at a friends machine shop and the 351c they were working on was at .030 over. I saw how they balanced the rods and stuff though. That was cool.
