Most likely you have some ground wires that are needing a good cleaning. We also have an article in the FAQ about how to improve the brightness of your headlights.

Change the headlight switch. It has an internalcircuit breaker that is going bad.

Does your car start ok? almost sounds like the battery is drained so far that your seeing the flicker of the regulator? When you start getting the flicker, is it a steady rate or does it go up and down with the rpms?

+1 on your headlight switch going bad.

While you're at it... do my headlight relay mod. See the FAQs

Betcha $20 its the headlight switch. I've been there before several times. You can disassemble it and clean it but it will do the same thing again in about a month, so you're better off picking one up at your local strore for no more than $30...
