1966 Mustang Fuel Tank Hazzard
As you probably know, the classic Mustangs have a problem with the drop in fuel tank. In a major rear end collision there is a chance the fuel tank can be pushed into the car through the back seats and explode putting the driver right next to the tank.
Besides buying a racing fuel cell, is there a metal plate that can be bolted down to prevent this from occuring? Any suggestions to make me feel safer in my car with my kids?
Thanks.

There are companies that make plates that go go over the tank itself and plates that go behind the rear seats. I would think that if you did one or the other, or both, you could rest easily. I don't have any link info available right now, but its out there if you search.
The other option is to install a fuel cell, think Reenmachine, for a super safe install.

There are also the steel pieces you can add behind the back seat. Doh, missed that part.

I personally think the fire risk is low as even if you contain the fire with a bit of metal it will be hot as hell in there. I would not (if i had kids) put them in the back of the stang as the lack of proper crumple zones mine to much energy into the passenger resulting in internal injuries. that my 2 cents
I just made a cardboard template of the size panel I would need to cover the opening behind the back seat & the trunk area and gave it to a buddy of mine who cut me a piece of 18 guage sheetmetal and I used sheetmetal screws to secure it. Free - I love free. I don't think it would cost that much and it's well worth it.You could go with both the behind the seat & the trunk armor. Whatever you prefer. Good luck & be safe.

part of the problem is ford only used sheet metal screws to hold the tank down. when compressed as in a rear ender, it rips the screws out of the trunk floor, and pushes it forward through the back seat into the car. i simply replaced all of the screws w/ grade 8 bolts and nuts so now it really is bolted to the trunk floor. i'm gonna add the metal divider this spring when i get it running again..
