Default gettin pissed off

when i hit bumps the car pulls left or right. It has done this for a while now. I've replaced some things to try to fix it, it has got better but still bugs me. I've almostrebuilt the entire front end except for the sway bar bushings and upper a arm bushings which is what i'll do next. Steering box has a little play in it ( about 2 inches if my hand is at 12 o'clock). Leaf spring bushings probably need to bereplaced , it feels like it's moving around a little. I got an alingment recently and that helped ALOT. Shocks on all 4 corners a new but they're just gabriel gas, nothing special. If i let go of the wheel while driving it drives strait as an arrow like a new car it's only eneven roads that give me problems. Any insight or past experiences is greatly appreciated, even if u think it's a stupid answer just post it because i need opinions. thanks, oh it's a 69

When the alignment was done did they say the front end was tight?
Are you running on bias tires?
How are the wheel bearings? Shock towers?
Does the steering wheel move when the car pulls?
Can you tighten up the steering box? It is a fairly straightforward process, well written out in the shop manual.

1 no they really didn't say anything.2 That is the old style correct, if so then no they are dunlop direzza dz 101. 3 wheel bearings are bout 1 yr. old wouldn't hurt to repack them. 4. towers are good. 5. sort of feel it in the wheel, but it's not like it is being pulled out of my hand or anything. 6. never tightened the steering box but i now of the thing on top that controls it.

How are the strut rods? Some places dont have people who are familiar with pre 80 vehicles and how to align them. The caster sweep wont show what happens when the car hits a bump, so they may have missed the strut rod bushings. If there is play in there and in your steering, that is probably where your darting is coming from. My 67 used to do the same thing, whenever I hit a bump the front end would move around sorta in a figure 8 and it would be very scary to drive like that.

You know me......I love these Mustang Monthly articles that help you to solve problems. You have bumpsteer. Kinda like acne when you are a teenager. Here's that article to get you not pissed off.

I took my fastback into Tire Kingdom and they had a kid working the alignment rack.He was TOTALLY lost. The boy hadn't seen the ball since kickoff.

I watched him scratching his *** and blinking for about ten minutes. Finally I went over and asked him if he was finding everything OK?

He mumbled something about studying the setup. Translation...he didn't have a clue.

I took him to school and showed him how it all worked. He too came tosee -the beautyof the simplicity of our classic setup.

You stole my thunder. I was going to ask the original poster where he actually found a shop that knew how to align his classic. If they can't run it on the rack and punch in the make and model on the computer, they don;t have a clue. I actually decided to learn how to align my car myself. I had to acquire some of the more primitive tools ti order to accomplish this, but it worked out fine. Of course if you have the original specs then they can punch those numbers in at the alignment shop. Those numbers can be found in an original Ford manual for those years. You can find those on Ebay now and then. They are rather cheap. Worth every penny. BTW If you car doesn't steer straight on roads that aren't straight, then that makes sense. Alot or roads are crowned for drainage . You may not notice that the level road actuall slopes to the left or right.
