Default C6 in a 66?

At some point in my '66s history the C4 was replaced with a 3 speed manual transmission.
I'm going to put an automatic back in the car but I'd really like to examine the options I have.
It would be nice to have an extra gear on the freewayto help with the mileage, C6s are easy and cheap to come by nad can take a beating.
Can one be placed in a 66 coupe? What modifications are needed?

...or should I consider something else keeping in mind I don't want to spend a small fortune.

you need an AOD. unless you are planing on more than 450 hp you can find performance aod's for 1200.00. you will get better performance and better gas milage.

The C6 you need has to have a small block bolt pattern. They were only used in vans and trucks with a 302 or 351w. Also a C6 is a three speed. I think I remember reading somewhere that the transmission tunnel has to be modified in the early cars.
