Default Welding Questions?

Spent some time working on the first welds since high school............Make no mistake, they look like it too! Anyway after grinding down some excess I have four spots , all on the hump and firewall that burned through. In these areas is the original sheet metal thinner? What is the best way to patch this? None of them are very large, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. I was thinking of taking some left over metal I trimmed from the floorpan and making small patches......all you real welders out there.........suggestions?

What kind of welder. Mig or stick? If its a mig, turn down your heat a little and take your time and fill them with weld. Then grind them down being careful not to overheat the area. The metal should be the same thickness. Hope its not a rust issue.
