.025 doesn't sound like that much to me but I'm not sure what the tolerance would be on that.

.025 is not much especially when you compare it to a ruler where .0625 is 1/6 of an inch.

but if I were getting .030 runout at the axle and not the wheel the car would be undrivable right now im .014 at the axle. .005 is tolerable upper limits for the axleI hear. Especially when my runout is only .002 at the wheel on the fronts

Hey Gun, that's great diagnostic work!

I wrote out a detailed response and the website ate it and gave me some crap about cookies...so here's the shorter version.

you're sure its 0.025" cos thats like 2x your business card or a bit more than half of this " - ".

If thats correct, my money goes back on the balance. With all the other associated 40 year old car stuff, I reckon you'd be hard pressed to pick that little axle bend as a vibration except on maybe the most perfect road surface. For example, mine was out by between 0.25 and 0.35" or 10 to 15 times your run out. It wasnt obvious until over 40mph and really got going around 60.

You said they found weights were missing right?
Have you had a chance to take it for a run since the rebalance? Any improvement?

You could also try your dial indicator trick on the drive shaft just to rule that out too.

keep going man, you are doing great work on this
cheers
ben

The weights were replaced and they told me they cleaned the wheels really well (stick on kind) and they wont fall off. I didnt notice any improvement. each wheel was off by about 1.25ozwhich is a fair amount and still didnt help any.

I went back out and measured the runout on the wheel with a good feeler gauge this time and itsvery close to.035. I can say with 90% confidence that runout is .035+/-.003 I know thats a far cry from .250 (or 1/4 inch)

On the axleits self im getting right about .015 (which gets magnified by the radius of the wheel to =.035) I keep hearing that .005 runout is upper limits which im 3x over. So according to them I found the problem.
the car is really smooth at 40mph but is pretty bad at 60 to 70.

Ill poke around some more but im pretty close to buying some new axles. Ill give it a few days to mull over.

Thanks again for you input

Gun

*UPDATE*

I took it to the shop today to have them add 2 new axels and a truetrac diff. They said they would replace the carrier bearings and axel bearings too.

Turns out the gears were chewed up and the pinion bearing was in critical condition. I dont know if it was due to the axels being bent or not. Funny it never made any noise??

So when its all said and done ill have a whole new rear end minus the case.

Ill let you guys know if its any smoother but I gatherit will be [&:]

Thanks for you help

Gun

Got it back from the shop and its a world of difference. It rolls real good now the windows dont rattle in the weather stripping and door frame, the door locks dont rattle around, the fat in my face doesnt giggle around anymore, the back rest for the rear seat doest squeak against the trunk frame anymore. Even though I have tight suspension its is once again a pretty smooth ride.

Its funny how these things creep up soooo slow that you dont notice them until one day just like WTF?? this wasn't always this bad was it? Or sometimes someone has to mention to you and you think damn they are right WTF is going on here?

Thanks for your help and suggestions guys (got that turetrac diff too so far i like it)

Gun
