170 to 302 engine swap
You will have around 10 grand in the swap, if you don't spend most of it on the engine, which you could do. Now you need to do the body work, paint, new interior, wheels and tires and newexhaust system. The body and paint alone is no less than 5 grand. Wheels and tires are another 1300 and the interior can be around 800 if you use the original seats and steering column and wheel. An air conditioner is around 1500. Now, add the original cost of the car, and add it up. Do you also come to about 19 grand plus the original cost of the car? Well over 20K, and you haven't even paid yourself for your labor. Now, you could jump into an 03 Mach I with all that already on it for about the same amount. That was the only point I was trying to make. I am glad you and your son have a project together, and I hope the cost of your project is more in line with your thinking than mine.

My son and I will have about 12K in the swap, counting the engine. include R&P steering, Stainless steel column, new Currie 9" rear w/disk brakes, all new front suspension, Wilwood disks in the front, Alum radiator, Tremec tko, safety bell housingand clutch.
The engine will be a 351 stroked to 408, all forged internals, roller cam, aluminum heads, etc. I selected parts carefully, looking for the best deal, starting with a used 351 with brackets and pulleys. I will assemble myself.
I will do the paint myself, I will have around 2,000 (materials) in paint and body, this will be a 360 degree paint job, everything top and bottom will get color. Wheels and tires were about $1,300, A/C is already in the car I will need a compressor and dryer, the rest I can make work. The interior is good, but it will be redone eventually. As far as the labor goes, right now I have the time and it is what I enjoy doing, some people play golf, or ride horses or somthing, myhobby is working on cars.
Original cost of car was 4K. When done, we will have about 20K in this car, but no one will be able to buy one like it off of any dealership lot.
We will spend a lot on this car, but we will also spend way more than needed to bring the car to"like a stock 66 V-8, my point is that a straight "swap" (nothing extravagent) could be done for about 1/2 of what we will do it for, if the 6 cly car is in very good shape to start with.
I dont have a completed photo of my last project at home for some reason, I only seem to have a in progress photo, I will post it just so you don't think I am FOS. (I know it is the wrong brand and type, sorry)
<<edit : I could have done another chevy if cost was my 1st consideration!

I agree with JDM, the swap can be done for half the cost for what his cost. I'm doing the same swap in a 66 I6 to a FI 5.0 and t-5 for around 5-6 grand. I got the car in really good shape with minimal bodywork to bedonefor 2K, runsdrives, all that good stuff, and a donor rotted V8 car for $100. For the suspension, power steering and disc brakes I'm using the fatman fab kit (2K), it basically converts the front end to a 94-03 stock front end so you can use the existing aftermarket for parts. You do have to pick up a few parts for it, like the spindles and such but its spelled out foryou in their ad, andif you look around the forum, junkyards, and auto parts storesyou can get them for cheap. I also got my motor and trans fromsomebody on the forum for$1100, it came with everything from the computer to the H-pipe, the only thing it was missing was the shifter ****. I'm modifyingthe motor with a new intake, cam, and heads. The radiator you can pick up for a couple hundred bucks to over a grand depending on what you want. And the wheels and tires you can also pickup from the forumsfor really cheap. It really depends on what you want out of your car, a show car or a daily driverorsomething inbetween, but to make it cheap you have to be willing to do the work yourself. I personally want a respectable looking daily driverfrom of my car and after assembling the parts I don't see it costing me over6K.My car won't be asextravegant as some other cars but it will be what I want, making a plan of what I want it to be was thebestadvice I got on this forum.
I will post these two photo's now that I have access to them, Just so anyone who cares might know that I can finish a project!
Me and my son's did all of the work on this project including paint, but excluding building the engine, we used a crate motor on this one.
The paint is by no means "perfect" but it looks pretty good anyway.

I am planning on doing this swap next year with my 65' just bought a 302 and tranny(which will need to rebuild). I am going to do the 4 to 5 lug conversion after the engine swap. A very experience friend of mine will help me install the engine for a case of beer
and my 65' is in really great condition with no body/paint work required. The 302 engine is just a block as of now.

Probably wont be strong enough to handle v8 power but im not sure. everyone and their mom is swapping a 302 into different cars, theres bound to be a nice t-5 somewhere or a toploader. This is ofcourse if the 3 speed couldnt handle the v8, of course if you plan on driving hr car much a tranny with an overdrive would be very useful, 3 speeds burn through gas fast, i get 10 mpg with a c4.
