Default disassembly help

taking apart the mustang for paint.

does anyone know how:

1)to take all the windshields, drivers, passengers windows, and the works apart? i would like to reuse them after the paint job but if it comes down to it, i might break it and buy new ones.

2)to take apart the lock mechanism? and how hard is it to reinstall?

3)will aircraft remover (paint remover) strip thru the material in the engine bay? i want to strip the paint in there as well but not sure if the aircraft remover will eat thru. its recommended to be used on metal surfaces only and it doesnt look like the parts in the engine bay are all metal.

the glass if you dont break it can be reused i replace mine was too scratched up to be any good anything you take off can be put back easy. that paint stripper will work only things in the engine bay not metal are rubber hoses and wires radaitor support iner fenders firewall are all metal. stripper will remove body filler and seam sealer just remember to replace the seam sealer.

1) We just took the window out of my bros 65 for cowl repair. The window on that came out easy after we got the chrome trim off. The trim is held on by little clips that need to be pulled down. NAPA has a trim removal tool shaped like a Y .You slip the one of the top 2 legs of the Y under the trim and slide it till you hit a clip and pull down. It takes a special touch but you get the hang of it after the first couple. Then all you do is slice the rubber gasket all the way around and push the window out from the inside. Use two people.

2) Dont know.

3) Air craft stripped will take the paint and most of the primer off the engine bay. I used a brush ,let it set then scraped it off with a bondo spreader. I also used a wire brush and a 5 inch disc w/5o grit (IIRC)sandpaper for some toughspots. Some of the original primer wouldnt come off so I left it. Have a good pair of rubbergloves and some eye protection because this stuff is serious. I rinsed mine off after I was done to make sure I didnt leave any in the cracks then followed the POR 15 regiment. .

The locking mechanisms for the doors are easy at least on my 70 .take interior panel off .make sure window is up . there are rods that have slip type clips on them to hold them to the actual lock rod and handles to the locking mechanism.take clips off , take the rods out of the holes, the interior handle is held in by two bolts through the interior door skin, the key part of the lock is made like the light switches it has a retaining nut on the back of it.the exterior handles are held on with screws from the inside, and the actual locking mechanism is held in with screws in the jamb side of the door
hope this helps

I read that if you get aircraft stripper on bondoit needs to be removed. I think it makes it soften or swell. Double check that info by doing a search or someone correct me.

I had good luck with it. You do have a mess but its no big deal if you plan ahead. Not muchmorethansanding just faster..Put news papers down & so on.Be sure to get the residue out of the cracks. Mines been on for 3 yrs no with 0 problems.

just a quick question... dont want to steal the post... How hard is it to reinstall the windshield after it is taken off... Do you just buy a new gasket and sit it in there or is there some kind of glue or is the gasket the glue. Ive never done glass removal/installation before. Are there any problems that could be forseen. I am trying to decide if i want to remove them then paint or tape then paint

Aircraft stripper is messy but quicker than sanding.I learned all thissummer on my car. After putting it on bondo make sure you remove the rest of it or at least a good layer of it if its thick because it will crack and flake. It will take everything off of the engine bay but try to limit its applicationto metal it eats through certain types of plastic really well, like screwdriver handles and some hoses. And like what Shifty said, it will mess up reapplied paint with its residue so follow up with denatured alcohol to make sure the surface is clean the apply your sealant. Also big thing, make sure youare in a really well ventilated area with a fan and you are wearing an approved mask, you can find a 3M one at most home depots. Rubber glovesthat cover most of your forearms are also a must.
