Default Rust on cowl vent

I started the disassebly of the 70 fastback. I removed the cowl top and the wiper mechanism. Looked inside and found very little rust. Most of it is around the cowl vent. The rust isn't very bad. I was thinking of cutting an access hole then repairing it then patching the hole. My son suggested painting it with POR-15 and forgetting about it. Personally I want to eradicate all rust. What do y'all think?

Get rid of the rust...All POR-15 does it not allow you to see the rust getting worse. You will be happier when you can step back and look at your 40 year old car, and say 'yep...shes rust free'

I agree. Fix it right and you'll never worry about it again.

I am completely taking my 70 fastback apart. When I pulled the cowel it appeared that there was very little rust around the air intake pipe from what I could see from on top of the car. When I pulled the heater box out from under the dash I was amazed at the amount of rust that was on the side of the air intake stack that could not bee seen from on top. I could put two fingers through the rusty hole. Yours may not be as bad but I would highly suggest doing whatever is necessary to check on the extent of rust in that area.
