Default body and paint costs

Can anyone advise me on the costs for body and paint on my '69 Mach1? I have a rust free body with new doors, hood, fenders, etc. The body was dipped to strip all paint etc. The written estimate from one body and paint shop was $40K plus!! Yet the guy doing the estimate said he has never seen a car that year in such excellent shape. Can anyone give me a rough idea what it really should cost?

40K? Sounds like you are from California La La Land.

I could see $40k for a total resto, but not for a paint job. I would be ready for at least $6-10k though if you want a true show quality paint job. Doing a paint job the "right " way is very time consuming.

You can expect $5,000 to $10,000... My 65 is running a little over $5,100 with no rust but three different sanding and then final paint job... It is sad that I can do all the mechnical that I want for less than a very good paint job.... Oh well. I will get around to a suspension system and disc brakes later.. hehe..

Yea,,, they really think they are good don't they.

Perhaps they are going to do the body work with gold.

Thanks for the replys guys. I had the feeling that this guy was trying to rip me off. I am ready to spend $10K for a decent body and paint. This body shop guy was recommended, can you believe it! Nowadays most seem to be real ripoff artists.Guess I'll just have to hunt for someonedecent. Thanks again.

Where are you located? Someone from the forum can probably suggest a painter.
