front end assembly question - 66'
I am starting the assembly on my 66 restomod project and when I bought the steering kit, the guy mentioned that I should NOT tighten the bolts until the car was on the ground. That made me think, should I wait on the sway bar too??? I am thinking the sequence should be something like this:
- tighten upper control arm where they screw into shock tower (did the shelby drop)
- tighten strut rods (poly bushings)
- install new coil springs and koni shocks (midolyne insulators)
- lower car
- tighten lower control arm
- tighten sway bar (1 1/8")
I alsoinstalled the granada disk brake kit from degins and the mustang power booster from mustangsteve with his foot pedal brake kit......coming together a little bit at a time (now if my daughter brings back the digital camera cable when she does the weekend from college thing, I will post pics, kids
)

Hi there. I think I would tighten the lower control arms before the strut rods, as you would want the angle of the control arm set tight, and not dictated by the strut rods. Also, the car will need to be on the ground before bolting up the top shock mounting to the tower, otherwise you will put some unwanted stress on the shock's shaft when it's bolted while in the air. I agree with the sway bar being snugged up last. This is a good question, I'd like to know some other opinions as well!
You want to tighten everything up while it is on the ground so that the bushings are in a 'neutral' position at ride height. Otherwise, the bushings resist the suspension compressing further and will wear out quicker.
Since I put on the disc brake kit with the spindles, should I betighten the spindle bolts for the disc brakes while the caris in the air(3 - steering rack, lower control arm, upper control arm)???? It would seem that I should tighten these in the air to make sure I get that good seat, what do you guys think??
Thanks
Thanks
