Oil Presure
Hey guys,
I have a 65 mustang, engine was rebuilt, edelbrock intake camshaft carb. I have a aluminum raditar, c4 tranny, petronix unit, and other goodies. My question is what should the oil pressure be when i am at a dead stop after driving for say 30 minutes. When i first run the car the oil pressure at a dead stop is around 40 to 60. It says around 50 to 60 whenever my foot is on the gas pedal. After I come to a complete stop after the car has been running a while the pressure drops down to 20 pounds. After an hour plus of driving it drops to 15 pounds. As soon as I step on the gas or shift into neutral it pops up to 30 to 40 again. The car runs cool, never above 210. Is the oil pressure dropping to low at a dead stop???
Thanks,
Greg

may be wrong but i think your fine. same thing with mine. it will pop up when u hit the gas since the oil pump will be pumping harder and faster. also as the car heats up oil flows a lot smoother and drops the pressure
What grade of oil are you using. A 10W-30 oil is light weight to begin with and as it gets hot, it thins out to flow better. A heavier oil, something along the lines of a 20W-40 or 10W-50 will keep a higher oil pressure as it gets hot. But as it stands, if you have better than 10 psi at idle, you should be OK.
yup, as a rule for our older designed motors i wouldnt use anything less than 10w40, i actually run straight 40 weight in mine since im in florida and dont have sub-zero startups. even up north i wouldnt have a problem using 20w50 in the winter though. its thick enough where there will still be a coat of oil on everything so your really not gonna have a dry start no matter what anyone might like to think. STP or Lucas is another way to boost your pressure a bit by thickening things up, they work very well and dont have additive garbage in them to screw things up. dont listen to hype about greased lightning, slick 50, etc...... those products are crap and do nothing but help clog oil galleys and small passageways.
most amusing thing i had was a guy asking if we had royal purp. course we dont and he was like "dang stuff is so good, cut my 1/4 mile by half a second"
damn ricers
i do use a synthictc blend tho (castrol). ive heard a couple different things tho, dont know if their true. if u got to synthitic u cant go back becasue of how your rings will set with synthitic oils.....dont know if its true tho.....+1 on 10-40 tho

Mine does the same. I hope its fine too.

doesnt matter if you go back and forth between syn and dino, the time your rings "seat" is when the motor is breaking in, and thats when you want dino or even syn blend (it will take longer to break in with syn blend though)
for my 06 i am sticking with full syn, for my 77 i am sticking with dino. i think i'll be juuuuust fine.
btw swapping out ALL lube in your car to full syn can give 5-10 RWHP, which would probably actually make a quicker run in a ricer that only has 125 hp at the crank to start with
