What Transmission do i have?
I know its a pretty dumb question but how can I tell if I have a C4, or a C6? Its a 302 in a 69 coupe, but not the original because the car is a Grande' the 351 and trans were taken out.. Any hints ?

c4 = small block tranny
c6 = big block tranny
302 = small block = c4
however if u said it wasnt original it could b somthing else.....is it manual or auto. if someone swapped it they might have swapped a t5 or something

if memory serves the easiest way to tell the difference between a C4 and C6 is a C4 has a removable bellhousing, and a C6 is all cast as one piece. they DID make C6's with a bellhousing pattern to fit 351w's which would also fit 302's, but again its simply a matter of looking at the trans and seeing if its all one cast piece or not. doubtful you have a AOD swap in there (overdrive later model trans) but thats easy enough to identify. 3 speed = C4/C6, 4 speed=AOD
C4

C4
The quickest way to identify the C4 and C6 is that the C4 has a pan that is basically square, whereas the C6 has a pan with one corner notched out. The C6 also has the bellhousing as part of the tranny body, whereas the C4 has a bell housing bolted on.
Yea, its a C-4 ,, now how do i get the tranny cooler line to tighten up and not leak..? Its leaking engine coolant, not trans fluid... I just put up a new thread about it..
C4 has a square pan and the C6 has a pan that looks like Utah.
I couldn't get my cooler lines to quit leaking after MANY MANY attempts.The problem was the angle at which the line was going into the tranny, I just was not able to get it to seat just right.
What I wound up doing was cutting the tranny lines and splicing in a rubber hose with 4 hose-clamps each. Make sure that you don't put the splice next to any heat source.
Not concours to be sure but it is hard to argue with success. She hasn't leaked in years.
