Tranny Conversion
I'm looking at buying a '65 coupe with a 289 and an auto, going to look at it Monday... It's a resto project... I would much rather have a manuel... I got a place where I can get a '69 3 speed tranny... Question being, is it a **** load of work to convert it or is it relatively simple??? Is it worth the time and effort??? Any and all opinions appreciated...
A 3 speed is not worth the time or money but a T5 5 speed, now that is a different story! There are some articles in the FAQ about converting to a 5 speed. Most all that will apply to changing to a 3 speed also.
If you are going to take out that C4 and put in a manual transmission, then you will be spending a ton of money on the upgrade. My suggestion is to either drive it with the C4 as is, or add the AOD to the C4 for that highway overdrive gear. But, if you have the coin, and are willing to get your hands greasy, then the T-5 is a good upgrade for these old ponies. The world class grabs my attention. Anyhoooooo....all that information about how to do it is in the FAQ section up on top.
I spent $3000 on my t5 upgrade on my 67 coupe. I used all new or rebuilt parts, and I would recomend looking at ModernDriveline. Thats who I would use if I were to do it again. Oh yeah, and I love my t5!
I think I have about 1700 in mine and I love it too! T5's kick ***!

Well i know where i can Get a rebuilt T-5 with a warranty $800 out the door complete with bellhousing.
so youl need to round up a clutch and flywheel and the pedals and the crossmember and a shorter driveshaft. Did i forget anything?you should be looking at somewhere around 1,200 range http://www.tbtrans.com/these guys are right on my doorstep

just stick with the c-4 it ain't that bad (you can build it up bad *** too) and it will be cheaper like if you do your own wrenching you can rebuild it to a perf spec for about 300 or the aod is a great option aswell but i would get either a t-5 or a 4r70w if i had the money but school eats that all up
For my Mustang, I gathered most of my T5 swap parts used locally. I have less than $1000 in the swap, that includes the driveshaft. I spent $1500 putting a Ford T5 behind a mopar 318 in my 65 Barracuda, price includes new hydraulic throw out bearing, and a new lakewood bellhousing among others. For the Falcon, I spent $700 swapping a T5 in, but I made my own tranny crossmember and clutch cable quadrant.
Would you like to buy a nice 289 COBRA equipped, T-5 with Hooker Super-Comps, Erson roller rockers, Crane Fireball 1 cam, Holley 600 cfm-vs with Centerforce Dual Friction Disc set-up?
I'm planing on a 351/Tremec, with a Paxton so the rest just won't stand-up.
