The 200, 6 cylinder only approaches a stock 289 if it has some serious mods. I believe it is barely over 100 hp, 100 ft-lbs of torque, stock.
stock the 200 is rated at 120HP and 193 Ft/Lbs of torque

i have modified mine pretty well and i think i can stick with a stock 289 easily

Versus 200 hp and 282 ft-lbs of torque in a stock 289. That's 67% more hp and 46% more torque. Sorry that my guess at the torque was so far off, but I stand by my assertion that it would take some serious mods for a six to approach a stock basic 289.And, I doubt that there is anything you could do toa I6, 200, to approach the power ofthe hipo 289, whichhas approximately 25% more power than the base 289.

i dont know what you would call serious mods but i have a cam, roller rockers, oversized valves, a header and a holley 2brl carb

and i have a buddy with a similar setup up who put a turbo on his car and it only cost him like $500 and he can whoop up on any stock 289 or 302 like it is nothing

^ that is wat id like to do eventually. Have the best of both worlds. Both a decent gas mileage car and a little punch in the gas when you need it!

Yea I can see that it would be kinda easy to put a turbo on a six, everything ison one side and all. Plenty of room too.

yeeeah. Maybe pride wasn't the good choice of words. Let's put it this way, I'd pay more for a original V8 car, then some I6 car that someone threw a V8 in there. Thats just how I am. I like my cars with their original engines, and i dont like I6's so thats why i take "pride" in owning a original V8.

Checked out a 68 coupe today that is for sale with a 6 cylinder, auto trans. It is the first time that i have driven a classic other than my 289 coupe andI was was surprised at the lack of power. I expected a bit more out of it, but it didnt do much even when on the floor.

just curious, is this the norm for the 200 6cyl stangs? or should itput outanything close to what a stock 289 has??
Well, I could have told you that. Those old 6's didn't have to much power.

We have put 4.10 gears in my son's I-6 Mustang in preparation for a V-8 swap. We drove the car for a while after the rear end swap. These gears really woke up the I-6, it was like daylight and dark. The car was fun to drive and the engine really liked the increased revs that the axle provided.

I highly recomend that the final ratio be raised to at least 4.10, if not 4.56 on all I-6 Mustangs. Like I said above the little 6 loves the revs. I would expect a reduction in fuel mileage, but we did not check for this.

I think that the old gears were 3.02 to 1.
