What's a good oil filter?
ORIGINAL: kalli
if the oilfilter is mounted properly, then it should never be an issue to get it out again. If you have to pounch the filter, then I guess something went wrong there.
To install an oilfilter:
a) dip your finger into oil and put it on the rubbergasket of the oilfilter. all around.
b) only fasten the filter by hand. (handtight). don't use any tools to fasten.
c) some people believe it's better to fill the filter with oil first before mounting. I can't see a real difference (oil pressure builds up a second earlier, but that's all)
Never had an issue getting an filter out when that was done right ..... maybe the previous owner of your car did it wrong ?!

Wix or Motorcraft, oriellies sells both for about $5
i got Wix because its a little shorter then some other brands so i could get the little twistie wrench around it to change it, i had a NAPA filter in there and i had t punch a hole in it to get it out

In earlier posts about filters, Fram got knocked pretty heavily. I've used hundreds of them in the last10 years (just cuz there sold everywhere), so Ialso googled for some comparison studies, like the one cited above. The backyard engineers and others doing these tests all agreed that Wix, and Baldwin if I remember right, were superior. (Champion was another...and those three make filters for a lot more brands.) In one report, an engineer from Allied Signal (the Fram manufacturer) has an email posted acknowleding poor quality control. The observation that interested me was poor (in fact, restricted) flow at start-up that contributes to lifter noise and piston slap at start-up. I think we had one report of catastrophic failure, but I think the everyday functioning is enough reason to change. I had just changed the oil in my wife'snew 2006 Altimaa week before reading the reports; Ibought a Wix the next day andreplaced the Fram.
wow,, I didnt know this about Fram,, I have been using the Fram with the black grip coating for years, on everything i have owned,, but now I guess I will start using wix or mobile 1.. Thanks guys,, Oh, and also.. I run 10-w40 in my 302 , I ran the same thing in my 79 f-100's 302 also.. It was a little heavier and just made me feel better about really lubing up my 40 year old engine..
our engine builder said that Motocraft FL-1A is the best to use if you are afraid if the oil slopping around because it has the best baffled design....more important if your racing than anything else im sure though.

c)Depends on what your working on. If you have a little kia or toyota and are using tiny filters, not much difference. Mustangs use a 1filter(I use the numeral coding by Mighty) and if you dont prefill it, this starves the pistons of oil until the filter has filled and then reached the pistons. Its a must on diesel engines though, since some filters hold over a quart and starves the internals too long.
