Unisteer rack and pinion install
Just a heads up to all out there who are thinking about a rack and pinion purchase from Unisteer. I've just completed the install of the system on my 1969 Mach 1 and there are a few things to watch out for. Do not attempt to put one of these systems in on your driveway on a saturday afternoon. Simple handtools will not get the job done but just make it take a lot longer. If you have access to a hoist and shop it will help alot ! My install took about 12 hours worth of labor to get near completion. Here are some things to watch out for. The instructions have some errors with measurements for cutting the steering column so you should contact the tech. dept. before cutting. There is an inner sleeve in the lower part of the steering column that needs to be cut back to allow for fitting the lower column support bearing in the steering tube so you will need a special cutting tool to get inside the column tube. On my installation I had to reposition the heim joint support bracket and drill new holes for the mount instead of using the gearbox mounting holes. Once installed I tried to do the alignment at our shop and found thetotal rack width was too short and couldn't get the proper amount of toe in needed. They are working on sending me longer inner or outer tie rod ends right now. Overall it appears to be a good setup and should improve the steering of the car once I get the proper tie rod ends. Thier tech dept. has been very helpful so far and they want to get the bugs ironed out of the new system qiuckly. I'll update you later after they resolve my tie rod problem and see how it drives.
