Thanks for the article posting Soaring. Didn't see it at first! It's all clear to me now!

That seems to be happening a lot lately. What am I, the fall guy?

K motors differed from standard motors with the following:

1. High nodular content crank
2. Thicker webbing in block
3. Larger main bearing caps
4. Larger connecting rods
5. Forged pistons
6. Solid lifter cam
7. Dual-point mechanical-only advance (hence the 12 degress initial advance)
8. Screw-in rocker studs
9. Cast-in valve spring seats
10. 54 cc(?) combustion chambers
11. Better exhaust manifolds

Some people want to believe the heads had different porting but they didn't.

I may have left something out. I'm getting old.

Actually, there are three 289 Mustang engines. The C code is a 2 barrel carb version and was listed at 200 Horsepower at the flywheel. The 4 barrel A code 10:3.1 compression version was listed at 225 HP. The Hipo is listed at 271 HP. This should answer your question of what is so special about the K code hipo engine.

What, the 289 D code can't get no love? I keep forgetting that the '64-1/2 had a different code for the 4-barrel.

FWIW, my factory service manual lists the 4-barrel at 10.0:1 and the 2-barrel as 9.3:1. I didn't realize the compression ratio was different. Learn something new every day ... but forget twice as much as I learn. [sm=alcoholic.gif]

5. Forged pistons

K codes did not have forged pistons. They were cast aluminum

That isn't what we were told back in 1965.

Well, I wasn't born yet in '65 so I wouldn't know what Ford said. What I do know is that I own a '65 K code and the K code book written by Tony Gregory even says they didn't have forged pistons.
