Default drivetrain questions

so, im assuming my 1966 mustang (factory 289)has the 8.8in rearend, my question is

How much power can i put to this thing? what gears should i run

my drivetrain plans include a 430hp 444ft/lbs. torque 347 stroker and a t-5 /t-56 transmission

is a t-56 a 5 or 6 speed? what 5 speed trans will hold up to the kind of power im looking at?

You don't have an 8.8 rear. You have an 8" open rear if it is stock. The 8 inchers are good to go up to about 400 or so HP if you don't beat the **** out of it. The gears you add will depend on what you will be using the car mostly for. For a street rod, the 355's are the best of both worlds. Take it to the track often, and you will need 410's. Now, if you are thinking about 450+ horsepower at the wheels, you will need at least a 9" rear with a locker or at least a posi traction.

t-56 is six speed, you may want to steer clear of the t5 though, I was looking into getting one for a while and they are not any good for high horsepower applications. You will want to go with a tko, at least the 500 model but possibly the 600 just to be safe if you want a 5 speed. I would go with a 9 inch like soaring said but if you are going to have a t56 you may want to think about 3.70 gears because it should give you good gearing but not eliminate the use of first gear at the same time (depending on which t56 you get). In that 9 inch, make sure you get at least trac loc if not a spool (depending on your application). There is a lot of options out there so make sure to research plenty and figure out what you want. Remember at the same time that cheaper is rarely better when buying car parts and the t5 is just that; cheaper.

IIRC, the axles aren't the problem with the 8" in fact they are the same as 28 spline 9" axles. The problem is a weaker pinion set up in the carrier. While you can spend the money on a stronger aftermarket carrier, You could spend about the same money and have the stronger 9" axle assembly. [sm=smiley13.gif]

Regarding the TKO 500 or 600, I would go with the 600. All of the prices I have seen for these transmissions (new) only differ by about $100.00, that being the case you will get an extra 100 lbs of torque capacity for about a dollar a pound.

All this hype on manual trannys is great, but is there a good aod automatic tranny that can be used for everyday use but still retains the power for hot rodding the streets?
