Default 1st-time buyer needs advice

Hi. Just joined so this is my first post and I'm not sure if it should be here or in the classifieds. I'm gonna be stationed here in Texas for the next 3 or 4 years with some spare time on my hands and would finally like to get an old fastback (65-70ish) to work on. I'm not looking for something restored - I'm looking for a project car. I've been looking online, but it seems either they're hard to find, or I'm looking in the wrong places. Another problem I'm facing is that I'm stationed kinda in the middle o' nowhere, so looking for any locally or even remotely close is almost not an option.

What kind of suggestions would you guys have as far as what to look for, *where* to look, and what are the big deal-breakers? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Joe, firstly have a good think on what year (differentyears have slightly different problems), V8 or I6 car, V8 more intiallymore expensivethan I6 but cheaper in long run than conversion of anI6. Rust is the killer for most people including me!

Hey what's up guys! Wow pretty excited that I got some replies already ... I'm ready to get the ball rollin. I'm in San Antonio for a couple of months, then I'll be back in Del Rio, TX (Laughlin AFB to teach new flyers) for about 3 years. I only have it narrowed down to a 65-70 fastback ... not very sure other than that. My uncle has a 69 Mach 1 sitting in my grandfather's barn. It's in beautiful condition but needs some love. Unfortunately, he's on bad terms with the family so it's not an option!

I guess I need to narrow it down some more between the 65-70?? Or would I not want to limit myself to just one model?

Joe,

Unfortunately for you as a buyer, the fastbacks have really skyrocketed in price over the last several years, regardless of condition. I could be wrong, but based on watching ebay sales, the 65/66 model years tend to run a bit more and the 67/68 seem to be nipping at their heels. Your cheapest bet may be to find a 69/70 non Mach-1 model. Even at that, they are not cheap. If you were open to the possibility of a coupe, the world is your oyster!

Yea that's kinda what I've been getting just reading the posts here. I'm not looking for a Mach 1 ... just a fastback (although my uncle's would be a pretty sweet car to get ahold of). Don't get me wrong ... I'm not a coupe hater, but I've always wanted a fastback!

Look at everything to get a real idea of what's out there.
You will be distressed by all of the junk for $7000

As far as years go, one thing to keep in mind is its easier to get big motors into 67+ years. In 65/66 cars its gonna be a really tight squeeze for a 351, muchless a big block.... just a thought if you're potentially wanting some big cubes.

Joe, there is a guy selling three 65's in the Austin newspaper right now for I think a grand. He says one is a 289. By the way the ad reads, they are all in non-working condition. I live in Wimberley which is about 30 minutes from San Antonio. Get an Austin American and look under classic cars in the auto section. If you want to go see them, then run by the house and pick me up on any day as I am retired. You can look at and drive my 65 and we can chat about what to look for when shopping for a classic Mustang. I can also go look at the cars and give you advice.
Give me a call. 1-512-847-3591
