Default Mustang Buying Hints?

I've loved retro mustangs for as long as I can remember. Awhile back, I was in Oklahoma City, and saw the most awesome mustang at the bass pro shop. I was browsing ebay the other day, and found a car that looked ALOT like the one I saw in OKC. After asking the dude selling it, I found out it was one and the same. Anyway, my passion for old mustangs has been renewed, and I REALLY want to get one.

Finiacially, short term, I can probably muster 7K in cash. In a year, I could probably throw 14-20K at it. I don't want a show room car, I want something I don't mind driving. I want something with a new or rebuilt engine that I don't have to work on all the time. Basically, I want a mustang that I can drive and treat like a normal car.

Ebay may not be the best place to look, but around here, it is an easy way to look at alot of cars, and get an idea of what is out there. I've really only come across two in the last few days that I've been interested in. The first is a 1967 Mustang that looks to've had quite a bit of attention. The second was a 1965 Mustang Fastback that looked more worn, wasn't in as good mechanicial or body condition, but I LOVE the body. It was a quite a bit more than the first mustang, (11,500 instead of the 7,000).

I guess I'm fishing for information. I'm not a car person, I'll be the first to admit. I like old mustangs enough, I'm willing to learn. I'm interested in getting on to learn on, and I'm looking for an idea of what older mustangs are worth, so I don't get ripped off, and an idea of the problems of owning an older car.

Any general advice? Any idea of where I can get an idea of what different years\models are worth? I don't give a darn about collectability, I just want an awesome car; but I'd like to know general price ranges are. In these two instances, say I wanted one of these two cars, which one should I get? Neither? Any Ebay experiences? Advice on other internet resources?

I know I sound like a complete noob, and I'll admit, I am. But I've been thinking and saving for an old mustang for a few years, and if I have to drive crappy cars 'till I'm 35, I'll do it. I don't want to spend good money on any of the ugly cars of today...

how much are you willing to do yourself. $7k can get you an okay mustang, so long as you don't require a fastback. But if you want it to "drive it like a normal car" as you say, you may need to one with more upgrades such as better suspension and brakes so that it can keep up with today's traffic conditions.Finding a car like that will likely blow your current budget...and that's before you consider that you wanted one with a recently rebuilt engine, which could easily put you over $10k if all else is good.

So the question is, are you willing to buy something now that isn't exactly what you want and then spend more $$$ later to improve it? Long run it's usually cheaper to buy exactly what you want than it is to fix up a lesser car to the standards you wanted. That's true with most any car, not just old mustangs. That's why you frequently see ads for cars that say the owner has more in receipts than the asking price of the car.

It might work out better if you wait a year when you've got more money. Like you said, you've wanted one for a really long time, so you probably don't want to compromise.

Every car will be different, but my best advice on not getting ripped off is to make sure it's not covered in rust. Yes all cars that old will have some, but you don't want it eating through things. Based on that, you don't want to buy one sight unseened on ebay where you don't look at every inch of it first.

5.0 has it covered...buy it done is cheaper than doing yourself, but its not as much fun and you almost always find something you wanna change anyway!

+1 on the rust.

only other thing i'd add is be patient...the right car will come along

If you'd be happy with a coupe, you're good to go now. For $7k you can get a nice runner that looks decent too. A fastback at that price will be a bucket. If you think you'll have $20k to throw at it next year, you may be able to get a nice fastback for that price, especially if the economy slips into recession as some are predicting and people have to start selling their toys. I cant wait to see that on the eveningnews...Police fail to catch hot vintage mustang after long chase. A police spokesperson said "the driver appeared to be nude. We had concerns about public safety so attempted to stop the driver. The car must have had a worked 351C because we couldnt get near it. By time the police helicopter arrived, he was long gone..."
