Default what to go with?

I have a 1965 mustang fastback gt. I recently had it restored, minus going into the engine, because it seemed to be running good. Now the 289 A code has a spun bearing, so I want to replace the engine. I was thinking maybe a stroker??? Or maybe the new BOSS??? Anybody have any suggestions or advice I would appreciate it.

You haven't given us much to work with - how fast can you afford to go? I.e. what kind of budget are we working with. Do not forget more power means you will find the next weakest link in the chain so be prepared.

If I were to do it all over again, I would go with a nice331 or 347 stroker motor.
If you had a 67 - 68 I would go with a 408 stroker, but it just gets too tight in a 65 -66.
Good luck.

Ummm.... budget wise I would like to stay $10K or less, that includes any changes I would have to make to the transmission and rear end.

If you bore and stroke that A code 289 using flat top pistons and add some AFR 185 heads, a Weiand stealth intake, a Holley 650 carb with a good bit of cam lift, long tube headers with dual exhaust and an X pipe, you will have all the motor that little car can handle. You will need either a toploader or a T5 tranny and a 9" rear with a locker or posi-trac.

My latest ordeals have convinced me that time is more valuable than money. Unless you need (want) 400+ big cube breathing horsepower, I'd pick up a Ford Racing crate engine with all brand new parts that can be repaired under warranty at any Ford dealership and live with "only" 345 hp. That is still a lot of power for such a light weight car and it'll save you the trouble of swapping out your rear end. Do I sound beaten down?

No, you are making a lot of sense. If I were to pull out the 289 I would go with a guaranteed crate. That is SO much simpler. I would then run the new crate while I slowly built the 289. Then after a few years, I would have to nice engines.
