painting for dummies - tips please!
hi guys,
i need to repaint the old stock rocker covers for my stang as the flash Ford Racing ones are going on another engine.
I've never painted anything on the car before!
How do i clean upor remove the old paint?
I have the right paint that matches my block - is it as simple as just spraying this onto the covers once they are clean?

I'm by no means a awesome painter, but I wouldn't worry about getting all of the old paint off. Just de-grease it real good, scuff it up a bit, prime and paint. If you want all the old paint off,I'd use aircraft stripper.Make sure you use gloves and a respiratorand do it where you have plenty of fresh air. I aircraft stripped my whole car in the garage, stuff is brutal. Btw,I looked in the glove box and found no paper. I did find out my glove box is made of thin cardboard lol. I'll be ordering a new one.
I agree with 6marc5. Aircraft stripper will make easy work of getting the old paint off. Just put it on, wait a few min and wipe it off. If there is still some paint on there then repeat until it's on gone. It shouldn't even require much scraping. Just don't get any on youself (or on your glove box. hahaha). Invest in some thick rubber gloves if you don't already have some.
ok thanks. you think i should prime them either clean or over the old paint once its cleaned up a bit...I should be able to manage that. what do you use to scuff it up?
btw the new glove boxes are also cardboard...when you get it be patient folding it out into place!

BTW, the aircraft remover will do a great job at cleaning the inside of the covers as well, brush it on clean it of and use a scotchbright pad to finish cleaning.
<<sorry to those who already mentioned the aircraft remover, I answered before readint the whole thread!!>>

I know a guy who put a tube of fiberglass glue (used for making boats) in his back pocket. The cap came off and he didn't notice because it didn't hurt at first. Ithad leakedall the way down his leg before he noticed anything was wrong. Before long the pain was so bad that not only did he go to the ER, butlocal hospitalinstantly helicoptered him tonearby US Navy Burn Hospital. My understanding is that aircraft remover is about as toxic as that glue is.

But in truth, that stuff can be nasty if you don't respect it. Wear gloves, I am sure that that stuff can soak through your skin. Last time I used it I got some on my hands breifly durring the process of washing it off, I could taste the stuff while laying in bed that night, I know I did not eat any, so my conclusion is that it had to soak through my skin.
But it is great stuff, I will keep using it.
