429 Noob Questions...
Hey guys, before I start I just want to tell you g uys sorry for the noob questions. I post in the 5.0 section ALOT so I know what its like and howw frustrating it can be. Sorry in advance lol
Now for the questions. I have an 88 LX project car that I am working on. I have been contemplating for a while what to do with it. I came across an opportunity for a 429 engine. Not sure if its a Boss engine or not but I doubt it. I just want to know the pro's/con's of this motor. Specs, etc. Does anyone know what I will have to do to fit it in my 88 LX? Im guessing aftermarket k member possibly? etc. What cars did these motors come in? Are they worth working on if I can get a shortblock for a few hundred dollars? or a complete engine? I just want to do something DIFFERENT than your normal 5.0 or 5.8L Mustang and I thought this would be good. I plan on having it cleaned up, stroked, etc. so stock numbers are not really going to matter much but I would just like to know. I want to learn as much as I possibly can before looking into these motors, who knows. I might just change my mind by the end of this thread lol. Thanks in advance for anyones suggestions, comments, advice, etc. Thanks guys!

The 429 first came out in 1968. So, if your engine bay is as big as a 68 Mustang, it will fit. Here is some information for you to read. If you could make it a CJ, man oh man.

its going to be a tight fit, probably some shock tower trimming.....im guessing its not a boss 429 because i dont think it would be for sale if it was...
if i were you id read some posts on 460ford.com because its got tons of info there.

i know a guy with a fox bodied 429.... its absolutely insane

i wouldnt stroke it, trust me its plenty of cubes and because the stroke is short they will rev up pretty quick for a big block and spin to higher rpm's without exploding as a general rule. from what i remember stock crank and rods are pretty f'ing tough - but i would always use better rod bolts (stock main bolts are prolly fine). i dont know if you have seen the intake ports on these motors but they flow plenty, some of the later 460's had weenie ports but seeing as how this is a 429 im pretty sure even the worst ones were still pretty kick ***.
i know hooker makes swap headers, and im sure there are articles about what needs to be done to make em fit. honestly i dont think its too much trouble if you buy the swap parts
basically, your gonna love it

If the short block is only a few hundred dollars, you can be sure it's not a Boss. It's not a quickswap but itwill fit with no shock tower modifications. Here is one of the company's that sell conversion mounts, etc.: http://www.mspmall.com/ddautospec/swapkits.html
My nephew put a warmed over 460 with some head work and a nasty cam (same dimensions as a 429) in a Fox body baby 84 LTD. The only sheet metal modification he had to make was to add a scoop to the hood as the motor sits pretty high. He had to use a hydro-boost out of a Fox T-bird to retain his power brakes and steering and a four shock 8.8 posi also from a Fox T-bird. The car is quite the sleeper and shocks most (not all) small block Mustangs and brand "X"'s.
The 429 was primarily used in Thunderbirds, Lincolns and big Mercs. My father bought a new Mercury Marquis in 69 with a 429. It was quite a runner for a land yacht.

Yes to all that has been posted. The 429 is a good big block. They make a lot of power with little mods. A Boss or CJ would be a rare find but the 70 and older 429's had 10:1 compression and with a good cam will make usable power without a lot of head work. The smog era 460's had larger combustion chambers, dished pistonsand a taller deck to drop the compression ratio down to 8.3:1. They also retarded the cam timing. They would still pull a stump out the ground with a low gear ratio. Anyway, I don't know what it takes to fit in the Fox body but I can tell you what it takes to fit in a 67...

heres a link http://fordifiedracing.homestead.com/bigblockfox.html it has alot of info and a link to 3 different companys that make the parts to do the 460 fox body. easiest way to tell if its a boss is to read the valve covers and the spark plugs go in the top of the head normal one they go in down by the exhaust ports
