it must be this time of the year again :-) everyone gets the cars out and they don't start

for starting you need 3 things:

a) compression
b) spark
c) fuel/air mixture

to see if you get any air, get rid of the air cleaner, look down the carb and push the accellerator. just to see if it sprays
to see if you get a spark unscrwe on plug, leave the spark cable on the plug as if it wer in the block. hold the spark plugs thread to the engine block to see if it sparks when the engine is turned
to hear if you have compression: what does it sound like when you're starting ? like wwwwwwwhhhhhhhh or rather like whupp-whupp-whupp. the latter is ok. the first is no compression.

let us know what's missing or if it's all there. if it's all there we have to narrow it down. (timing, mixture ....)

The car goes whup-whup-whup when it turns.

I am not getting spark. I took the #1 wire off and held a screw driver next to the spark plug to check for a spark.

I am not sure about the position of the dist. I can turn it 180 degrees if you think that will help solve the problem and give me spark.

well you should be getting spark even if its 180 degrees out but it will be at the wrong time how are the points and are you getting 9volts to the positive side of the coil with the key on?

[hr]ez had probs with neutral safety switch and that will cause the engine not to turn.
So your trouble is either distributor or coil.
a) make sure the engine is grounded and if it is check for spark agaion with screwdriver in cable and the screwdriver pretty close to the engine block.
b) as you have breaker points: get rid of cap and rotor and look at breaker. The thing should open AND close when you turn/start the engine.
c) try the old coil
d) the coild should have 3 cables. 1 spark cable going to middle in cap of distri. 1 should carry + when the ignition is switched on and the third is the one leading to breaker.

Anybody know the firing order for that I200? Check that. If you are getting absolutely no spark, then your coil could be dead, or your points aren't opening and closing. Double check the points seetting. I don't know what it is.
