Default rear axle

hi, i recently purchased a '65 coupe.i believe it has a 3.00:1 rear axle ratio. is it true that it makes me get better gas mileage, but hurts my acceleration?? i don't know much about the rear axle. any feedback would be great. thanx a lot.

It helps your mileage by being able to drive highway speeds at low rpm. It definitely cost you acceleration though. stepping up to a 3:27 or 3:55 would make you feel a nice boost in acceleration and will be reasonable on gas mileage.
