65 in-dash "Type D" speaker
I have started the interior restoration on my 65 fastback and have noticed the in-dash speaker is shot.
I really am not putting a high performance sound setup in my car.
At this time I am just installing a USA-66 radio and descent in dash speaker.
Anyhow, I ran across this "Type D" Pioneer speaker in my NPD catalog and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it.
Will it plug directly into the stereo or will it require a seperate amp?
Thanks in advance...

Honestly, I'd buy a set of 3 1/2 speakers myself and use the old one for dimentions to make my own plate. Shouldn't be that hard, and you'll end up with better speakers for less money.
The speakers are actually by Pioneer not Pyle, not sure whytheycall this particular setup the "pile driver."
I will be running wire to the kick panels, but will not be putting in anything there till much later in the future.
Do you guys think I would be better off with a single 4 x 10 like this?

I installed one in the dash last year, no amp just hooked up to radio. Installed 2 speakers in the rear as well. The dash speaker is ok but if you are looking for serious tunes you may want to go with the other suggestions. Ok for the casual listener, not sure how much power you can pump through them....
I had a set in my 66 hardtop, replaced them with the quarter panel type. The indash type just didn't have it. Along with the speakers in the package tray, I now get fairly good sounds. Making your own setup is rather time consuming and expensive, especially if you want 60W types. With a fastback you are somewhat limited, but I had an enclosure that fit behind the seat so I didn't have to cut into the fiberglass panels or drill holes in the trap door, both definate no-nos..

The picture is very misleading. If it has pioneer speakers that really doesn't mean much. They could be using the terrible white paper cone woofers with the "wizzer tweeter".
You might be suprised with how much stereo you can get for little dough. If you have a couple hundred dollars, you can get a really nice entry level setup.
If your just going with something to get you by, go to an auto parts store and buy the cheapest set of 3.5's or 4x10 possible. I justcut up an old computer speaker to put in mine. I will soon run some left over stereo stuff in the car though.

I used something like that in frontand put little5x7s in the back. It all sounds okay, except there is no bass...so I put a subwoofer in the trunk. The end result is a fairly good system and a 100% stock look.
To answer your first question- there is no point in having a seperate amp to powersomething that small(any radio should be able to power that with little effort).
