A improper alignment can cause the steering not to return. A steering box adjusted to tighty can also cause it. The floaty feeling is probably just worn out suspension, however check the steering box tightness.

The car is 42 years old. Rebuild the power steering control and the upper A arms. Replace everything else. You can probably keep the springs.

+1 on the alignment...also, what kind of condition are the tires in? Your floating sounds like it could be a case of bump-steer, in which the tires tend to follow ruts and bumps in the road.

well the tires are in good shap likenew i say maybe 2 years old and we never seen any kind of wear,, as long as you keep it under 60 or so its fine its hard to say cause of power steering its easy to steer anyway,, but you get to 70 or higher man it tricky

if its not returning to center the idler is bad the play but theres probably a combo of the ps ram the tie rods and ball joints etc it would be wise to go ahead and get a master rebuild kit
