Default 302 or 289?

hey everyone!
Agentleman is selling an engine locally that has a casting number of C9OE-6O15C. Can anyone tell me what this is? It looks like a 69 block according to the C9. . . but he's trying to tell me its a 66 289 and that Ford produced 289's in 65 that went into car way later. What I need is a '66 289 for my mustang!

I think you need the date code, it is just "under" the numbers you sited above.

Here is a link to a site that might help you out.
http://raceabilene.com/kelly/hotrod/engine3.html

I tried to look up your casting number but couldn't find an exact match. The closest I found was a 69-74 351W with C9OE-B and C90E-D. From the sounds of your post, it doesn't look like that is correct.

Hopefully you can understand the chart better than I can. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick replies! I thinking I'll pass on this engine. I'd prefer to keep it as close to original as possible-at least era correct. Thanks!

good to see you puttin in the work to find period correct parts and not just throwin a 351 in there... try perogie.com and dscmotorsport.com they sell old engine blocks and heads...i build ford engines fora living and have bought several blocks and heads from each of em prices are pretty decent on 302/289's and also look and see if you can find any auto swap meets near you, those are pretty good places to find blocks and heads too...if not junkyard hunt...

Reason #1 why you shouldn't use stock parts for that kind of hp output. If you read about the 289 Cobra's the guys who built them will tell you that 375 out of a h-p 289 block with a much better rod-length-to-stroke ration than a 302 was the most reliable power they could get and THAT was with all the money Ford could throw at it.I'll say this again...5800 rpm is the MAX safe rpm for a 5.09 rod 302. And you just proved it.
Sorry for your loss. (next time use a 5/4" h-beam rod with a stud gridle)
